The central government is very capable. A lot of right things has been done in an extremely fast speed. Infrastructure are very well maintained and construction speed is lightning fast. For one example, look at the high-speed rail progress in China, 10 years 20,000km and thriving, spurring a huge amount of economy along the lines. US isn’t even capable of building a Washington DC – Philly – New York – Boston line which makes the most economical sense. 2) Money is abundant. For the thing I do (research), a lot of research has to be government-sponsored. And US NSF is just such a well-ran organization without much funding, given its competition of all the best schools in the world. Some other funding agencies, such as DARPA, are very undesirable for most of us because of the strings they put on their researchers. Overall it’s much easier to get resources for research in China than in the US. Even in terms of salary, the high-tech salaries in Beijing and Shanghai can match that in the US.
