Actually most of us realize that quite well. We feel for their struggles and wish we could somehow help them more. We aren’t so old and ignorant that we can’t remember what we paid for rent, then that first house and subsequent houses. We also know what we paid for vehicles. We are well aware that salaries have not kept up with inflation. Kept up is far too tame a description. Let’s say that we are very aware that salaries have been decimated by inflation. We also know that the good career production jobs of yesteryear are gone and the few that are left are still leaving town. It is scary unless you either have a certain specific degrees or have chosen very carefully your occupation. These generations are not the first to be hit with economic problems. Most of the folks who had to find a way to scrape their way through the great depression had the same issues. I’m a boomer and I am quite cognizant that I had a much easier path than either my grandparents or my kids.

It’s not hopeless, though. My grandparents first two decades of marriage were times of extreme frugality. They simply did not do things that cost much money. Concerts, dining out, vacations, and things like that were just too expensive. If they did take a vacation they visited relatives so room and meals were cheap.
