In the UK, if you tell anyone your son/daughter has a place at Oxford or Cambridge you’ll probably get a “Wow, you must be thrilled”. Most other top universities you’ll get a “cool, that’s great”. When I was an undergraduate, one of my tutors told me that the most beautiful university he knew was neither Oxford nor Cambridge, but Cape Town. I didn’t want to believe him, but years later, I went on a conference there, and he had a point: It is even more impressive when you get there, and see those mountains in the flesh, or rather in the stone. (I took the photo from their website – I’m sure they won’t complain). Oxford is still the university I dream of, and in my heart, it will always be the best university in the world because it was my world from the age of 18 to 28: I’m sure most people have the same feeling about the place that shaped them, but I have to admit that there’s a noticeable absence of mountains.
