That was a dead-even game, except that the Chiefs could make field goals and the Bills missed one they should have made. The only way in which I question the coaching is that even if that field goal had been made to tie the game, Patrick Mahomes probably would have driven the Chiefs for one of their own, and Harrison Butker would have made it. Even with that being fourth-and-9, I’d have given serious consideration to taking my chances on Josh Allen, rather than tie the game and give Mahomes a chance to do his worst—which he has done to the Bills in the past in a lot less time. But that’s not a fireable offense. He trusted his kicker to make a 44-yard field goal, which he should have. A kicker who can’t make that kick should be not for long in the NFL. And he trusted his defense, which is reasonable even if I would have rather Mahomes not touch the ball again. The coaching didn’t lose that game. The players on the field decided it and the Chiefs were just a little better. Changing coaches would be a knee-jerk reaction, nothing more.
