I think so. this new style of playoff could eliminate .500 teams from sneaking into the playoffs and allow for possibly three teams from the same division to make it. The team with the most wins in each division goes to the playoffs. If there’s a tie (i.e., the same number of wins, or 2 ties in place of other teams having a win and a loss), then they use something besides wins, which is where the tiebreaking scenarios come into play. As to why the NFL doesn’t take just the top 7 teams in the conference and seed them 1–7, I guess it’s because they want a winner in each division — in other words, winning a division is its own little feat. So there’s an award for that, then there are the three wildcards. A team plays the other three teams in its division twice — so six out of the sixteen games in the year are division games, so a division means something.
