It will greatly help you to develop (or maintain) relevant fitness. Watts are watts. This year during COVID-19 lockdowns a lot of professional cyclists had to restrict themselves to indoor rides, and it worked well enough for them – so it is going to be good enough for you as well. After I got indoor trainer in autumn ’19, in spring ’20 my fitness was actually better than before the winter, despite riding almost exclusively indoors. At the same time, it won’t help you to develop various skills that are important for riding outside: how to safely descend fast, how to handle your bike in general, how to endure all kinds of weather (OK, you may get some sort of heat training from indoor rides), how to ride in a group (nope, you won’t automatically ride through other people like it happens on Zwift), how to deal with different kinds and conditions of road surface, how to deal with other people who are non-cyclists (be it tourists standing in the middle of the bike lane or car drivers who seem to be lacking common sense), and so on.
