It’s because trans women have an innate advantage over cis women, but trans men do not have such an advantage over cis men. Those who are vocal about excluding trans women from the “women’s” division generally (^with exceptions) do not care if a trans man competes in the “men’s” division. If it were up to me, there would be two divisions for the relevant sports (obviously, chess doesn’t require these): It doesn’t have to be about “men” and “women”, the point is that growing up exposed to male hormones grants an unfair competitive advantage. This is the same reason we ban steroids and other doping. It simply isn’t fair to ask the rest of the field to either, The fact of the matter is that, in certain sports, the average male has a tremendous advantage over the average female. If you think that isn’t true, then I hazard to guess that you have never played one of those sports. As somebody who does play one of those sports, my advantage is obvious. I consider myself to be upper-middle of the men’s division, but if I were allowed to play in the women’s division, I would medal regularly in the highest division of competition. This statement is based off of my performance in mixed division tournaments along with experience in mixed practice sessions. I’m genuinely baffled by the magnitude of this factor’s impact.
