Normally customs officers just lift up and feel through clothing in suitcases, but on this occasion my suitcase was completely emptied, with all of the contents being stacked to one side. I was asked a few questions about the reasons for my visit, and I explained that I was returning home after my wedding to Leony, my Filipino fiancée only three days earlier. Soon after our wedding in a church in Quezon City (on the same day as Princess Diana’s funeral, incidentally) I had to return to work in the U.K. and Leony had to return to work in Hong Kong.
