TrainerRoad is for the pure racers and data jocks whose idea of a good time is thrashing yourself in front of a black screen with blue bar charts and a little yellow line crawling from left to right imperceptibly as the sweat pours down and your legs turn to rubber. Its array of structured training sessions and plans is very large with options specific to a wide variety of rider types and goals. It exists for one purpose only: to get you into peak form for your races. And it’s good at doing that. The app I use most is The Sufferfest. It bases its structured workouts and training plan recommendations on the idea of Four-Dimensional Power. In order to calibrate the app to your current abilities, you undergo a stress test that determines your ability to generate power over periods of five seconds, one minute, five minutes, and twenty minutes. This is better than basing power targets on one-hour FTP alone, because road racing is rarely really about FTP alone, and it’s important to be versatile. The Sufferfest also adds an element of entertainment (or distraction from the agony) to the mix. Most sessions feature a race story line (wherein you achieve victory) and they are shown with video footage from inside the pro peloton combined with a music sound track that features some seriously bad-ass grooves chosen and timed just right to give you a boost when you most need it. It really makes a difference, because, as the name of the app suggests, you are going to be doing some seriously painful sessions, and you’ll need all the motivation you can get to make it through. It also has yoga session videos (highly recommended) along with strength training, guided meditation, and advice on diet. So, in a way, it’s almost like having a coach. If you don’t know how to train for racing yet, The Sufferfest can get you on the right track.
