Through a process of evolution. It’s not really accurate to say Rock and Roll was invented in the You betcha huskers shirt Besides,I will do this same way that the printing press was invented. It wasn’t an innovation that meant we went from a time before Rock to a time after it, music just changed and then someone later created a term for what had happened in the past. There’s no one point where we can claim it was “invented” One of the songs often quoted as The First Rock and Roll Song is Rocket 88 which is credited to Jackie Brenston but written by Ike Turner. It’s often given credit as the first Rock song thanks to the fuzztone guitar effects but so much of what we’d consider rock and roll isn’t present. It might have the obsession with cars and a fast lifestyle but the beat is different and the instrumentation doesn’t mirror what we think of as rock. It’s also worth pointing out that it’s not really an original composition. It’s based heavily on Cadillac Boogie, a 1947 Jump blues song by Jimmy Liggins, so it’s not actually original anyway and can’t be called “an invention”. Rock and Roll comes from the evolution of Jump Blues and Rhythm and Blues with other elements thrown in for good effect. You can see elements of it in dozens of early tracks and it’s impossible to pinpoint at what point they all came together to form what we now call Rock and Roll.

Check out Les Paul’s playing here from 1951 and tell me it’s not Rock and Roll.
