Similarly, they have taken the Denver nuggets bring it in mpj murray and joker shirt in addition I really love this worst and laziest possible action here in kowtowing to extremist hate groups. You don’t increase your profits by making it impossible to shop in your store, and you don’t get less violence by giving in to threats. There’s a very special mix of violence, stupidity, hate, and aggressive, narcissistic entitlement amongst the American right these days that says if you do something they don’t like, they have a God-given right to blow your ass away, in Jesus’ name, amen. On the one hand, Target, like the radio stations that received bomb threats and death threats for playing the Dixie Chicks back when they were right wing thugs’ villain of the day, aren’t in the business of putting their employees in the line of fire. American right-wingers have demonstrated time and again they absolutely will kill people if their fee-fees get hurt. I do think that all of us in our society must take the violent threats by white supremacists, fascists, and Republicans much more seriously. They have repeatedly demonstrated their willingness to commit extreme atrocities against anyone who doesn’t embrace their hateful worldview. After all of the mass shootings and events like the violent attempted insurrection on Jan 6th, we really can’t dismiss these psychopaths as a “fringe” element, they are the heart and core of today’s Republican party. Many of us have known this all along.
So it makes sense that Target might take steps to ensure the Denver nuggets bring it in mpj murray and joker shirt in addition I really love this safety of their employees, however, I really hope they don’t imagine this will deter the violent elements. If anything, it might embolden them for even greater threats of attack. On one hand, there is a cowardice inherent in bowing to threats from homophobic terrorists. On the other hand, we live in a country rife with mass shootings and ignoring threats could result in a store full of dead employees and customers. Is there really a “correct” choice here? At the end of the day, this is merchandise that Target only stocked in the first place with the goal of profit. I don’t think profit should ever come before the safety of workers. Sure, pulling it could be seen as a “win” for homophobes, but would not pulling it really do anything for the LGBTQ community? You could argue that the visibility alone is important, but I don’t think tatty plastic junk emblazoned with rainbows on the shelves of a big box store really counts as visibility. There are things better worth protesting (like banning LGBTQ-themed books in schools).
