SUVs often have to be built to withstand stresses and hits; so manufacturers use more high tensile steel on SUVs (and pickup trucks) than they would on other vehicles. This would drive up costs. If it’s an AWD or a 4×4 type, it’s drivetrain and transmission would have more components – thereby driving up costs even more. Many SUVs come with a locking or limited slip differential of some sort on one or both axles. Most hatchbacks and sedans make do with an open differential on the axle that powers the wheels. These axle differentials cost a lot of money as well. (In the Indian market, the Thar 4×4 comes with a factory-fitted but Eaton-manufactured Mechanical Locking Differential in its rear axle.) In some markets, such as in the Indian market, the government slaps a higher excise duty on SUVs that are longer than a certain length, that are powerful or have excessive ground clearance. This higher excise duty is passed on to the customers.
